Sue (Cannova) Cook, a lifelong Freeport resident, is running for Alderman of Ward 2 with a clear vision to serve her community and address the concerns of her neighbors. With a deep-rooted connection to the area—her family’s restaurant business is a local staple, and her father was a respected dentist—Sue brings a strong sense of commitment and service to her candidacy.
A proud graduate of Freeport High School (Class of 1978), Sue went on to earn multiple degrees, including a dual major in Psychology and Philosophy, and minors in Deaf Education and Biology, graduating Cum Laude from MacMurray College in 1982. She furthered her education at Highland Community College, Sauk Valley College, and the Swedish-American School of Radiation Therapy, all while maintaining top honors.
Sue’s professional background spans a diverse range of fields, from education and healthcare to customer service and volunteerism. She has worked as a paraprofessional and biology teacher for at-risk students, an administrative assistant at Catholic Social Services, and as an X-ray technician and radiation therapist. Her experience also includes a variety of roles in the hospitality industry, where her passion for connecting with people took center stage.
Sue remains committed to her community and is passionate about serving as a voice for Ward 2 residents. Her priorities for the office of Alderman include:
A member of St. Thomas Church and a supporter of local charitable causes, Sue is married to Randy Cook, who works for Kyndryl, and together they share their home with a beloved “furbaby.” Sue’s past volunteer work includes leadership in the “Young Volunteers in Action” program and service as a counselor with the YWCA’s Stay-at-Home Camp.
As Alderman, Sue’s goal is simple: to serve with integrity and dedication, creating a city that works for everyone, not just the able-bodied. She wants to ensure that Freeport remains a welcoming and accessible community for all residents, with a particular focus on inclusivity, safety, and sustainable growth.

Enhancing Accessibility & Infrastructure: Sue is dedicated to making Freeport more accessible to all residents, particularly the elderly and disabled. She is committed to improving curb cuts, sidewalks, parking lots, and road conditions to ensure that mobility aids can navigate the city safely and comfortably.
