Joshua T. Atkinson is a passionate and dedicated candidate running to become the next mayor of Freeport, Illinois. His journey to this point has been shaped by a lifetime of diverse experiences that have prepared him to lead with strength, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to the community.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Joshua’s early life was marked by resilience and the support of his grandparents, David and Cynthia, who adopted him and his younger brother to provide a loving and stable home in Carmel, Indiana. There, he thrived, benefiting from an excellent education at Carmel public schools and Butler University. His formative years were a balance of academics, stage performance, travel ice hockey, and competitive sailing. Summers spent racing Thistles—a 17-foot, three-man sailboat—with his father and brother at the Indianapolis Sailing Club taught him the value of hard work, teamwork, and integrity. These experiences instilled in him the principles of sportsmanship, perseverance, and respect that continue to guide him today.
After college, Joshua joined the United States Navy, serving as BM3(SW) Atkinson aboard the USS Thach. His service was both an honor and a profound responsibility, providing him with the opportunity to see the world and serve his country. Following his naval career, he transitioned to the restaurant industry, where he spent 15 years running, expanding, and developing restaurant operations across the nation. This chapter of his life showcased his leadership and business acumen, skills he later brought to his role as Vice President of the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce, where he supported and grew the local business community.
In 2015, Joshua met his fiancée, Michal, and together they became deeply involved in their community, running a small art gallery, organizing summer camps for children, and offering music lessons. In 2021, they moved to Freeport, Illinois, and purchased “The Castle,” a historic home symbolizing the potential and resilience of the city. Since arriving in Freeport, Joshua has committed himself to the community’s success and well-being.
Joshua’s vision for Freeport is rooted in unity, collaboration, and progress. He seeks to bridge divisions within the community and foster a sense of shared purpose and pride. His leadership will focus on ensuring children receive excellent education and opportunities, supporting local businesses and homeowners, and creating an environment where every resident feels valued and heard. By promoting open dialogue, encouraging collaboration, and addressing the community’s challenges head-on, Joshua aims to build a stronger, more inclusive Freeport.
With a commitment to commonsense leadership, Joshua believes in walking alongside the community—from Park Hills Golf Course to the Pecatonica River—to listen, engage, and work tirelessly for the people of Freeport. He is dedicated to fostering a city where all voices contribute to its growth and prosperity.
As a Navy veteran, business leader, and community advocate, Joshua T. Atkinson brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to service. He looks forward to the opportunity to serve as Freeport’s next mayor and invites residents to join him in building a brighter future for the city.

“It’s time for change and I believe Josh Atkinson is the man for the job. For 8 years nothing has been happening for Freeport. We need better for our families and our kids. Freeport, Josh deserves a chance. Over the next few months, try to get to know him and what he’s about before you make decisions about what ya’ll hear about a person.
Josh is going door to door, going out to different places, trying to meet people. I haven’t seen anyone doing that. That’s what you suppose to do. I appreciate him for that.
You do need to know who and why you’re voting for him and he’s trying to let you guys know what he wants for Freeport. The things he trying to do for our town. Go out meet him, talk to him, ya’ll been making decisions without even really getting to talk with people. I’m definitely going to make it my business to meet him. I hope some of you guys do the same before it’s time to vote.” Betty Munn
“I’m ready for a new vision and new ideas for Freeport. The status quo that has been in power the last number of years has become old and stale without real progress for our city. There are not enough good jobs with living wages which can support a family. Rental housing in some areas is a disgrace with shabby living conditions and slumlords charging ridiculous rents. The current mayor believes we have to become a more “distressed city” to get funding. Dark Streets allow crime and gun violence to proliferate all across our city, while our young people are dying. Too much nepotism and cronyism is holding us back with the few reaping benefits while the greater population suffers. The lack of ability to think outside of the box is getting us nowhere. Trust in city leadership is at a very low point. Therefore, I endorse and will vote for Joshua T. Atkinson for mayor. I hope you will join me in voting for him, too.” - Reverend Diane Jochum
Joshua is a breath of fresh air and a beacon of hope in the darkness that is Freeport. I trust he will guide the city to success and implement a positive change in the city we all love." Makiah Stacy
"I publicly announce my endorsement of Joshua T. Atkinson for mayor of Freeport in 2025. Change is in the wind."
"I have worked with Joshua on a variety of projects and in a variety of settings. In all of these arenas: Joshua puts people first."
"Having to close down any business due to decline is a huge loss for our community. Joshua Atkinson is bursting with energy and drive to get Freeport back on track to thrive not just survive. I was the owner of Cafe Mondo from 1998 - 2025."
